5th Grade – PHYSICAL SCIENCE: Structure and Properties of Matter

The 5th Grade Science Kit will introduce students to the concept of matter. Students will discover how matter is made of atoms and how all matter can exist in three forms: solid, liquid, or gas. In module 1, students will become detectives and investigate unknown substances and how they interact with other substances. The next module will challenge students to predict and observe how matter is measured. Students will also conduct experiments to see how matter can change form when it undergoes heating or cooling. Making new substances is the theme of module 3. Through experiments, students will observe chemical reactions and discuss how they take place. Additionally, students will conduct experiments to see what happens to matter when two or more substances are mixed and observe properties of matter to test and identify different materials. Finally, the kit concludes with students making models of matter and using the design process to show what they have learned.
